Sensory App (YCH)

As the UI/UX Developer at Yakima Chief Hops, I worked with the in-house Sensory Department to design this application to meet their needs. The Sensory App was built to empower the sensory team to perform various tests with panelists and gather sensory data for different beers and hops. Because of the way sensory data is gathered, user flows weren't included in the initial designs, just the user-facing screens/tests (happy to elaborate on this in-person).

Core Features:

  • User Dashboard: Provides a list of upcoming panels & sessions that users can add to their calendar, a snapshot of some of the main stats & metrics, and - if the user is an admin - a list of useful links for quickly managing sessions, creating tests, etc.

  • User Profile: Allows users to manage their basic profile information, access previous panel results, and doubles as a HUD full of more complete stats & metrics from their participation.

  • Seven Unique Test Types: Over the years, the Sensory Team had pioneered beer and hops sensory and developed a number of different ways for panelists to provide feedback. From simply ranking multiple samples by preference to comparing a sample against predefined standards or selecting all of the aromas they can detect within a given sample. Some of these test types even included ways for the Sensory Team to train new panelists.

  • Add-Ons: Allows the Sensory Team to modularly add various things to their tests. For example, if they want to provide meta-data for the sample users are experiencing, an additional comments field, or mark a couple of tests as "Repeated Measures" to see if panelists answer the same way twice.

  • Admin CRUD: This section wasn't mocked up, but part of the project was creating a CRUD where the Sensory Team could create panels, sessions, tests, define lexicons, manage panelist accounts, etc. We used Filament for this which worked nicely.

My Contributions:

  • Worked directly with the stakeholders to gather requirements and ensure the app I designed was exactly what they were looking for.

  • Developed mockups/prototypes in Figma and iteratively presented them to the Sensory Team for feedback.

  • Assisted with implementation in Vue 3 and ensured front-end styles matched design specs.

  • Gamified the login, 404, and stats & metrics pages. Even though the site requires authentication to enter, it's probably worth checking out the login screen (yes, you can toss them around with your mouse or finger).
